Iowa Equine Industry Directory

Many thanks to all IHC members who submitted photos to be considered for the cover of the 2009 directory.  The response was great and photos were very good.  The promotions committee helped select the cover photo which was submitted by Ivy Robinson.  This was so successful that we plan to call for artwork and photos in the future, so watch for the announcement!  I would encourage members who are artists to consider sending in an original art design.

Thanks go out to those who sent in listings and solicited listings from across Iowa.  We continue to expand the directory as a resource for the Iowa equine community.  Be watching for our updated forms after April 2009.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all the advertisers in the 2009 Directory who truly made the resource happen.  IHC members are encouraged to support these advertisers and ask your suppliers to consider advertising in our next directory.

Thanks, Rebecca Cordray!

2009 Iowa Equine Industry Directory Cover Photo - WINNER!

Ivy Robinson

Submitted by Ivy Robinson, Shelby, IA

This is a photo that I took this summer of my 3 horses.  All three were bred and raised in Iowa.  The palomino is Special "Leo" Tag, 22 years old.  I have had him since he was a yearling and he was bred by Lyle Smith of Nevada.  The sorrel is CK "Risque" whom I bred and raised.  The bay, Hot Zip N Pine or "Zippo" is her son, who I also raised.

I live with my husband, Steve (a native of Shelby), daughter Cassidy (8) and son, Dean (6) on an acreage west of Shelby, Iowa.  We farm and I teach Preschool. Originally from Florida, I came to Iowa to attend the horse program at Kirkwood in 1984. I started breeding horses about 16 years ago.  I have only had two AQHA broodmares producing an AQHA World Champion western riding horse out of my second broodmare, Dolly (who is the dam of Risque, the sorrel in the photo).

Special Leo Tag (he was bred by Lyle Smith of Nevada, Iowa), or Leo, is the palomino and is 22 years old.  I have had him since he was a yearling.  He is now my children's horse.  They trail ride, show him in western pleasure, walk/trot and showmanship.  In his younger years, I showed him to AQHA points in showmanship and English pleasure.  We won the Showmanship classes at the Iowa State Fair two years in a row. He is a fantastic trail horse and loves to go fox hunting.

CK "Risque" is the sorrel mare and is 7 years old.  She is by Vested Pine and out of Zips Holly Dolly.  She is what I was striving for in my breeding program.  She came along the same time I was having children, so she has only been shown in open shows and trail ridden.  In 2008 she got to go on her first fox hunt and she did great considering that it was the first time she had an English saddle on her!

The bay is Risque's son and is by Hot N Blazing.  We call him Zippo which is short for Hot Zip N Pine.  He is just two and is doing a fine job of learning how to be ridden and has already started on Showmanship.  I bred Risque to get a replacement for Leo and he is my first second generation of horses.  I look forward to showing him in English classes.

Our property is very modest.  We would love to have new-tec fencing. My horses are born in a barn that is around 100 years old. We built two stalls inside.  They have pasture 24/7 during the summer time (very important for developing bones and muscles and old geriatric legs) and only come inside during snow storms or severe summer storms. It is a great pleasure to look out my bedroom window and to see the barn and the horses.
